Reply with quote | #1 | Hi all,
Is it just me, or does anyone else find the last visit information that shows that you just logged in, to be less than helpful. I would think that your last visit information would be most useful if it gave you some idea of the amount of time between visits. Otherwise, you might as well just have a "Time you logged in" indicator.
For instance, this morning I logged in at 10:27 AM (PDT), after having not visited the forum since sometime last night. But the last visit thingy says "You last visited today at 10:27 AM." Shouldn't that be, Your most recent login is today at 10:27 AM?
This is, of course, not a big deal. I just thought that I would mention it and see if anyone else finds it interesting/curious.

Reply with quote | #2 | Interesting. Mine says, "You last visited Yesterday at 06:36 PM" - it might be a bug in the way the forum software processes logins. __________________ James Grahame

Reply with quote | #3 | Yeah, I noticed that too, when you log in, it just shows your last visit, which happens to be a few seconds or minutes before you logged in.
If you stay logged in, it will show the last time you visited the site, but as I often use public computers, I don't do that (though do to networking problems at home, I use this option on my computer, but it logs me out of it if I log in somewhere else)
About half the sites I go to do this, I think it depends partly on where it stores the cookies (some sites do it themselves, some want one on your computer)
LOL, for me it's not really a big deal though, I try to go everyd ay anyways.

Reply with quote | #4 | Hmmm. I didn't think about the possibility that it might be cookie dependent. I always have my browsers clear my caches, dump my histories, delete cookies, etc., every time I close the browser. So if the visit log is looking for a cookie, it won't find one and might just use the most recent login data, as it is the only data it would have.
I would have thought that the login info. would be stored on the server where the BB software lives and be IP address driven, but a cookie makes sense.
Like I said in the original post, this is not a big deal. The only thing that it does jam up is that there are never any new posts since my last visit, as I always last visited at the time I logged in.

EDIT: Okay, I just did a little experimentin', and it must be a cookie thing. I logged out, surfed around for a few minutes, opened a new tab and navigated to the forums anew, and lo and behold, the last visit thingy showed my last visit correctly as the 3:47 PM earlier log in.
I am not going to change my browser settings to allow a Retro Thing cookie to remain in my system, so I guess that I will have to either subscribe to the threads that I am interested in following, or just look around a little longer to see what's new since my last visit.
Really, this is a non-issue. I was just curious, and now my curiosity is satisfied. The forum is great, and I am sure that this will be a fun and educational place to pop in and visit.
Thanks,
Kent

Reply with quote | #5 | I don't know about for you, but for me, I can see all the forums that have new messages before I log in, and I just make a note of that so I can go to those.
Funny, I didn't think I had my browser set to delete cookies, oh well, I'm not technically inclined, so I'll probably leave it as is. Nice to have an answer though
